Big Island Vacations
The Big Island of Hawaii is twice the size of all the other islands in the chain combined. It is also an island of diverse landscapes with everything from the barren moonscape look and rainforests that can be found on the southeast part of the island to the grassy areas of the northeast and the resorts of the western Kohala Coast. A Big Island vacation package is about variety.
The Big Island has a breathtaking 266 miles of coastline. History is everywhere. You will find ruins in the valleys and archaeological sites on golf courses. There is a rural feel throughout this large island that can best be found by driving the island. The Big Island is also world famous for the Iron Man Triathlon held here every fall.
Big Island Vacation Planning
The Kohala coast is where the five star resorts, such as the Four Season Hualalai and the Mauna Kea, are located. It is a jaw dropping experience the first time one leaves the main road in this coastal area and watches as the lava rock landscape descends to one of the resorts with white sand beaches and lush tropical gardens. Each resort is secluded so there are no beach walks to connect the coastline here like vacationers will find on Oahu and Maui.
Kailua-Kona, south of Kohala, is the other visitor populated area of the island. Most resorts here are surrounded by volcanic rock. The views are spectacular, but there are few sandy beaches. Accommodations are more reasonably priced in this area, from the Outrigger Keahou to the newly remodeled Sheraton Keahou Bay. The main street here, Alii Drive, is lined with restaurants, shops and farmers' markets. Continue south to tour the D. Uchida Coffee Farm and sample the freshest coffee around.
East Hawaii is home to magnificent flower farms where orchids and anthuriums abound. Hilo is the largest city here. It is worth the drive just to see the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, not to mention the yellow ginger growing wild along roads, yards and as far as the eye can see. Hilo is also the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, where the only active volcano in the islands can be explored. The Waipio Valley Lookout is a dramatic way to view the Hamakua Coast with its black sand beach, a sight not soon to be forgotten. This is also one of the most photographed views on the Big Island. Many visitors never visit the east side of the Big Island because of the great beaches and golf on the west side of the island, but it is surely worth seeing!
